Huddling close together, the three friends inched their way along the twisting passage, their path illuminated only by the small candle that Kellach had pulled from the pocket of his apprentice robes.

“I don’t know why you can’t just create a magic torch or use a sunrod,” Driskoll said to Kellach.

Kellach switched the candle from one hand to the other when a drop of wax fell on his thumb. “If this cleric is as powerful as I think she is,” he said, shaking his hand to cool the bum, “she’ll sense the magic if we get anywhere near her, and the energy of the sunrod too. This way, we’re practically invisible to her.”

“Unless she or one of her ghouls actually sees us,” Moyra pointed out.

Kellach frowned. “Yes, but there’s less a chance of that happening if we try to stay hidden.”

“This is eerie,” Driskoll whispered as they moved farther along the passageway.

“And so quiet,” Moyra added.

Kellach nodded and his eyes narrowed. “A little too quiet, maybe?”

No sooner had he said it than a soft chirp came from somewhere to the right of them.

Driskoll raised his sword. “What was that?”

Kellach put a finger to his lips. “Shhhh.”

Moyra clutched Driskoll’s arm as Kellach scrambled to the right.

There was another chirp, and suddenly a bat swooped down in a whoosh of air. It flew past their heads and disappeared in the darkness behind them.

Moyra clutched her chest. “That bat nearly gave me a heart attack,” she said.

Then she noticed Kellach, who had flattened himself against the wall and was covering his head.

“Are you all right?” Moyra asked once she was sure the bat was gone. Kellach’s face turned very red. “Sure. I’m fine,” he replied, straightening his apprentice robes with shaky hands.

“Right,” Moyra said under her breath, thinking that he had looked a lot like a frightened girl scrambling to climb a chair when a mouse happened by.

Just then, Driskoll cried, “Look at that!” He pointed with his sword to a door ahead of them.

Moyra and Kellach’s gaze swung in the direction Driskoll was pointing.

“That’s the room I found the cleric in,” Moyra said. “See the carving on the door? Just like on Yardif’s tomb and on the medallion.” She made a disappointed face. “But I doubt she’s still hiding there.”

“Probably not,” Kellach agreed. “But we might at least be able to find some clues or another secret passage where she might have hidden Zendric.”

“Let’s hope!” Moyra said.

The three Knights inched toward the room on tiptoe. When they reached the door, Kellach very carefully wrapped his fingers around the handle and cracked the door open.

Moyra held her breath, waiting for something to pop out at them. When nothing did, Kellach grew bolder and pushed the door open completely.

Except for the light of his candle, the room was completely dark.

Moyra and Driskoll followed Kellach into the room. Once they were all inside, Kellach quietly closed the door behind them, then moved to the wall, where a couple of torches protruded from sconces.

Touching the candle he
